About the Company: GitLab is the world's most comprehensive AI-powered DevSecOps platform used by over 50 million registered users. Fully remote with employees in 60+ countries.
Job Description: GitLab is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the teams building core primitives for Workflows and Function Runtime. You will own the strategy, architecture, and delivery of scalable, multi-tenant, and cost-efficient distributed systems that serve as shared infrastructure for many product groups.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own the technical vision and roadmap for GitLab's core Workflow and Function Runtime primitives in partnership with Product, Architecture, and platform teams
- Lead and grow multiple engineering teams responsible for highly available, horizontally scalable, secure distributed systems
- Drive operational excellence including SLOs, on-call, incident response, capacity planning, and resilience across regions and tenants
- Define and mature platform APIs and abstractions that allow product teams to compose workflows, schedule functions, and integrate with runtimes safely
- Recruit, develop, and retain senior and staff-level engineers and managers
Requirements:
- 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 4–6+ years in engineering leadership (multi-team or org-level)
- Proven track record as a hands-on engineering leader who contributes meaningfully to architecture and design
- Strong background in scalable multi-tenant distributed systems: service decomposition, data partitioning, fault tolerance, backpressure
- Demonstrated success operating mission-critical production services (SLOs, postmortems, chaos/DR testing)
- Experience driving cost efficiency in cloud-native environments (AWS/GCP/Azure, serverless, Kubernetes)
- Experience managing managers and senior/staff engineers
Skills Required: Kubernetes, AWS/GCP/Azure, event-driven architectures, function-as-a-service, distributed systems, people leadership, async communication
