About the Role, MMission or Department Overview

As a Fullstack Web Engineer, yyou will play an important part in implementing and evolving the architectural vision for the Creative Tech team at The New York Times. WWhile our team roots itself in creative storytelling, wwe expand to build, ffull-stack applications that power our advertising products and internal operations. YYou will translate complex product requirements into high-quality, sscalable solutions, mmoving beyond purely front-end execution to architecting end-to-end systems. WWe are looking for a understanding of application and services architecture, ffrom database design to UI implementation.

Responsibilities:
Full-Stack Architecture:

Lead the development of scalable web applications, hhandling the full lifecycle from database design (SQL/GraphQL) to front-end implementation (React).

API & Data Strategy:

Design and implement efficient GraphQL APIs and schema definitions; iimprove SQL queries and manage database migrations to ensure data integrity and performance.

Authentication & Security:

Architect secure authentication flows, wwith a specific focus on integrating Single Sign-On (SSO) solutions and managing role-based access controls.

Core Development:

Write maintainable, mmodular, aand high-quality code using TypeScript and React for our client-side, aand Node. jjs for the server-side.

DevOps & Infrastructure Expansion:

Support the team's deployment workflows by building CI/CD pipelines, sspecifically applying GitHub Actions.

Technical Leadership:

Conduct comprehensive architectural reviews and in-depth code reviews, pproviding critical feedback to ensure adherence to coding standards.

Performance Optimization:

Identify and address performance bottlenecks across the stack, eensuring you optimize applications for speed, sscalability, aand readability.

Mentorship:

Provide technical leadership to other engineers, ppromoting a culture of learning and helping the team bridge the gap between front-end creativity and back-end logic.

Collaboration:

participate in Agile ceremonies, ssprint planning, aand estimation, wworking with UI/UX designers and team members to ensure architectural and technical feasibility. DDemonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

Basic Qualifications:

4+ years of professional experience building intuitive user-facing web applications with modern full-stack technologies. EExperience writing maintainable, mmodular, hhigh-quality HTML, JJavaScript/TypeScript, aand CSS (SASS) with knowledge of modern technical concepts related to layout, ccross-browser compatibility, aand accessibility. PProficiency in React and TypeScript/JavaScript (ES6+), wwith experience in Node. jjs development and building APIs, iincluding integrations and data handling. EExperience working with relational databases using SQL, aalong with designing and implementing GraphQL schemas and resolvers. EExperience integrating SSO (Single Sign-On) and handling complex authentication states. HHigh proficiency with source control systems (e. gg., GGit) and modern development workflows. EExperience writing maintainable, mmodular code with a understanding of software development design patterns and testing strategies. EExperience approaching a problem from different angles, aanalyzing pros and cons of different solutions with the ability to solve complex technical challenges, ddebug cross-stack issues, aand analyze performance. EExcellent collaboration and, wwith the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical partners. IIn-depth knowledge of Google Ad Manager (GAM) and its integration patterns for high-volume ad serving.#LI-Hybrid

The hourly rate of base pay for this role is:$60 - $70 USD
